

The deeper water in a pond is often left open, as if it were simply space between shelves and margins. In reality, this central area — typically 50 to 150 cm below the surface — is where a pond finds much of its balance. When planted thoughtfully, deep water moderates temperature, supports oxygen balance, creates refuge for wildlife, and brings structure and seasonal interest to the pond’s centre. The aim is not to fill the deep zone, but to shape it — allowing the surface, the water below, and the base of the pond to work together.
What counts as deep water?
In most garden ponds, the deep-water zone begins at around 50 cm and extends to the maximum depth of the pond. For many UK ponds, this is often 60–90 cm in the centre, though larger ponds may be deeper. Even container ponds can have a meaningful deep section relative to their size; what matters is having an area where deep-water plants can establish below open water.
The three types of plants that belong in deep water
Rooted plants with floating leaves
These include water lilies, water hawthorn, Nuphar and other deep-water aquatics. Their roots sit in baskets at the base of the pond, while leaves and flowers rise to the surface.

Submerged oxygenating plants

How much should you plant?
Aim for approximately 60–70% surface cover at the height of summer, while keeping open water for light, gas exchange and movement.
For most small to medium ponds, this may mean:
- One appropriately sized water lily
- Submerged oxygenators beneath the surface
- Seasonal floating plants if extra shade is needed
It is usually better to introduce deep-water planting gradually and adjust over time. Plants expand as they establish, and balance improves as the pond settles.

Common mistakes in deep water
- Planting lilies too shallow, which can reduce flowering and encourage algae
- Overcrowding the surface and losing open water (limiting gas exchange)
- Ignoring oxygenators (they matter even when you can’t see them)
- Leaving the centre completely empty for years (too much open water can contribute to temperature swings and reduced habitat value)
Deep water in context
Deep water planting works best alongside shallower margins and pond-edge plants, creating structure from surface to base. The deeper zone brings stability and refuge; shelves and margins add vertical interest and habitat; and the edge supports amphibians and damp-loving plants. Together, these layers create a pond that feels natural and remains easier to manage over time.
Care and maintenance in the deep zone
Do deep water plants need feeding?
Many deep-water plants benefit from additional nutrients during the growing season, particularly water lilies and other flowering aquatics. Because they are grown in aquatic compost within baskets, nutrients can become depleted over time — especially in container ponds, or where plants are lifted and repotted.
A slow-release aquatic fertiliser applied in spring supports strong leaf growth, reliable flowering and healthy root development. In established ponds with rich sediment you may need less; in baskets, a consistent annual feed is often helpful.

Winter care for deep water plants
In most UK ponds, deep-water plants can remain in place over winter. The deeper water provides natural insulation against frost.
- Remove yellowing or decaying leaves to keep the pond tidy and reduce decomposing material.
- Lower baskets slightly if they were raised in summer, so crowns sit safely below the frost line.
- Avoid disturbing dormant crowns unnecessarily.
In very shallow container ponds, prolonged hard frost can be more of a risk. In those conditions, moving baskets temporarily into deeper water (or a more sheltered position) can help protect dormant crowns.
Moving, lifting or dividing deep water plants
Deep-water plants occasionally need repositioning, thinning, or division. Strong-handled aquatic baskets make lifting and adjusting plants much easier — particularly in deeper ponds where safe handling matters.
The best time to divide or repot most deep-water plants is late spring, as growth begins. Lift carefully, refresh aquatic compost if needed, divide the crown where appropriate, and replant securely. Avoid major lifting in late autumn or winter unless it is essential.

Adding variety with floating planting baskets
Floating planting baskets allow you to introduce marginal plants into deeper water without disturbing the pond base. Planted with 1-litre or 3-litre basket-grown marginals, they create adjustable pockets of surface cover and interest — ideal where shelves are limited, or where you want flexibility.
They are especially useful in container ponds, ponds with steep sides, or anywhere you’d like to fine-tune shade and structure through the season.
