Barley Straw for Pond Algae Control (Compostable Pack)

    Description

Barley straw offers a natural way to help control algae in garden and wildlife ponds.

As it slowly decomposes in water, it releases natural compounds that help inhibit algae growth before it becomes established. It works gradually and is most effective when introduced early in the season as part of a balanced pond care approach.

Used preventatively, barley straw can help reduce:
     • Green water
     • Blanketweed formation
     • Recurrent seasonal algae growth

It is not a chemical treatment and not an instant fix. Instead, it supports long-term pond balance when combined with strong planting, shading and sensible nutrient management.

Each pack is UK-sourced and supplied in a 100% compostable, biodegradable net with a recycled cardboard label — no plastic, no synthetic additives.

    One pack treats ponds up to 2,000 gallons (9,000 litres), approximately a 3m × 3m × 1m pond.

Safe for fish, frogs, newts, birds and pond wildlife when used as directed.

      Growing Instructions

      When to use:

      • Introduce in early spring, before algae becomes established. It takes time to begin working, so early placement is important.

      How to use:

      • Remove and recycle the cardboard label
      • Place the barley straw in an area of gentle water movement — near a pump outlet, waterfall, filter or fountain
      • In still ponds, float near the centre or anchor in shallow water
      • Replace every three months
      • Overlap new and old packs for a few weeks to maintain continuous algae control.

Allow approximately 4–6 weeks for the straw to begin releasing its beneficial compounds.

      Care Instructions
      • Barley straw helps control algae growth but will not remove heavy existing blooms
      • If algae is already present, remove excess growth manually before use
      • Replace regularly throughout the growing season
      • Avoid placing directly against pump intakes
      • Store unused packs in a dry place
      • Consistent, preventative use supports more stable pond conditions over time.
      Growers Tips
      • Add early in spring, before water temperatures rise significantly
      • Works best alongside good pond planting and surface shading from water lilies or floating plants
      • Reduce excess nutrients by removing fallen leaves and avoiding overfeeding fish
      • Gentle water movement improves distribution of beneficial compounds
      • Particularly well suited to wildlife ponds where chemical treatments are not desirable

Barley straw is most effective as part of a wider pond management strategy rather than a standalone solution

      Wildlife Tips
      • Barley straw is safe for fish, amphibians and invertebrates when used correctly
      • Because it works through natural decomposition rather than synthetic chemicals, it is suitable for wildlife and ecologically sensitive ponds
      • Healthy planting, nutrient balance and preventative algae control together create the conditions for clearer, more stable water

      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
