Colourful Marginal Pond Plants Collection

    Description

This Colourful Marginal Pond Plants Collection brings together a carefully chosen mix of flowering and foliage‑rich marginals, selected to add visual interest around the pond edge and into shallow water.

Rather than focusing on a single plant type or look, this collection celebrates variety — combining plants with different heights, growth habits and seasonal features. Expect contrasts in form and texture, alongside blooms and foliage that bring colour and movement throughout the growing season.

While ornamental in character, these plants still play an important ecological role. Marginal plants provide shelter for amphibians, cover for invertebrates and resting places for pollinators, helping to support a healthy pond ecosystem.

As with all our collections, plants are selected from our expert marginal plant range and are fully suited to the UK climate. They perform best in full sun to partial shade and are ideal for pond margins, shelves and shallow water planting.

Each Colourful Marginal Pond Plants Collection is handpicked by our expert growers from our wider marginal plant range. Instead of working to a fixed species list, plants are selected at the time of dispatch based on health, vigour, seasonal performance and ornamental value.

This flexible approach allows us to offer a varied and visually balanced mix that is more cost effective than buying plants individually, while ensuring you receive strong, UK-grown marginals that are well suited to current growing conditions and ready to thrive around the pond edge.

      • Images shown are for illustration purposes only — actual plants supplied will vary
      • Plants are selected weekly by our growers based on quality and condition

      Important notes:

      • If you order more than one of the same pack size, the same plant selection will be supplied in each pack
      • For greater variety, consider ordering different pack sizes, choosing another collection, or placing a separate order at a later date

      Pot sizes:

      • Plants are supplied in 9cm, 1 litre or 3 litre pots, depending on the collection chosen
      • 1 litre and 3 litre plants are supplied in Finofil aquatic baskets
      • 9cm plants will need repotting into 1 litre aquatic baskets before placing in the pond
        Growing Instructions

Please always follow the instructions on the individual plant labels supplied. The guidance below provides general advice for marginal pond plants.

        Planting depth

        • Marginal plants are best placed on pond shelves or shallow water areas
        • Planting depth varies by plant type, but is typically from pondside down to shallow submerged positions (Zones 1–3)
        • Planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface

        If using 9cm pots:

        • Repot into 1 litre aquatic baskets, using aquatic compost
        • Apply a top dressing of washed gravel to help anchor the plant and reduce soil disturbance

        Sunlight

        • Most colourful marginals perform best in full sun
        • Partial shade is also suitable, though flowering may be reduced in shadier positions

        Soil

        • Use aquatic compost or soil‑based pond compost only
        • Avoid multi‑purpose composts, which can cloud water and release excess nutrients

        Hardiness

        • Plants in this collection are fully hardy in UK conditions
        • Once established, they will tolerate winter cold when planted at the correct depth

        Feeding

        • Marginal plants benefit from slow‑release aquatic fertiliser tablets during the growing season
        • Feed sparingly, following product guidance, to support healthy growth and flowering
        Care Instructions
        • Remove spent flowers during the growing season to encourage further blooms where appropriate
        • Trim back excessive growth to maintain balance around the pond edge
        • Divide congested plants every few years to maintain vigour

        In autumn:

        • Avoid cutting all growth back too early
        • Leaving some stems and foliage in place can provide winter protection and wildlife habitat
        Growers Tips

Vary planting heights and depths to create a more natural, layered look around the pond

Group plants in odd numbers for a softer, more organic appearance

Allow space for plants to mature — many marginals increase in size over time

        Wildlife Tips
        • Marginal plants are essential for pond wildlife, offering shelter, breeding areas and resting places
        • Flowers support pollinators such as bees and hoverflies
        • Dense foliage provides cover for frogs, newts and aquatic insects

For maximum wildlife benefit, combine colourful marginals with native oxygenators and floating plants to create a balanced pond ecosystem.

        Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
        Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

        Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
