Winter Hardy Plants Collection - 3 x 1 Litre Plants

    Description

The Winter‑Hardy Pond Plant Collection has been developed to ensure your pond retains life, structure, and ecological function throughout the colder seasons. While many aquatic plants retreat in winter, this carefully chosen selection includes resilient marginal and deep‑water species that continue to provide form, movement, and valuable habitat.

In most cases, the collection includes Aponogeton distachyos (Water Hawthorn), a highly valued winter‑flowering oxygenator with distinctive floating leaves and delicately scented blooms. This may be complemented by architectural marginals such as Acorus gramineus or Juncus effusus Spiralis, which provide upright structure and shelter for pond life. Alternative hardy varieties may occasionally be included, depending on seasonal availability and nursery selection.

Each plant is supplied in an established 1 litre aquatic pot, ready for placement into baskets or directly into the pond at the appropriate depth. Together, these plants help maintain ecological stability, support beneficial microorganisms, and ensure your pond remains visually calm and balanced during winter.

      Growing Instructions
      • Please follow the guidance on the labels provided with your plants

      General guidance:

      • Place plants at the appropriate depth for the individual variety.
      • Marginal plants are typically placed on shelves in shallow water, while deep‑water plants such as Aponogeton distachyos should be lowered to deeper zones once established.
      • Most winter‑hardy pond plants prefer full sun to partial shade.
      • Avoid placing plants directly beneath heavy leaf fall where debris may accumulate.
      Care Instructions
      • Minimal care is required once established
      • Remove excessive dead foliage in late winter or early spring to maintain water quality and allow fresh growth to emerge
      • Ensure plants remain submerged and do not allow baskets to dry out
      • Use aquatic compost if repotting or dividing
      Growers Tips
      • Aponogeton distachyos often produces its most valuable growth during cooler months when other plants are dormant. Avoid disturbing it unnecessarily during winter.
      • Combining upright marginals with floating‑leaf plants creates visual balance while also improving ecological resilience
      • If growth becomes crowded over time, plants can be divided in spring
      Wildlife Tips
      • Winter‑active plants provide essential shelter for overwintering insects, amphibians, and beneficial microorganisms
      • Submerged foliage helps protect pond life from temperature fluctuations and predators
      • Maintaining plant presence throughout winter supports a stable, balanced pond ecosystem ready for spring
      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
