Receiving and Caring for Your Pond Plants

Receiving and Caring for Your Pond Plants

Your pond plants have been carefully packed for their journey and may look slightly soft or flattened when they arrive. This is completely normal. With water and a short period of rest in shade, they will quickly begin to recover.

Opening your plants promptly and giving them the right conditions from the start will help them settle well.

Unpack and Rehydrate

  1. Open the package as soon as possible after delivery.
  2. Remove plants from any bags or protective wrapping.
  3. Place them straight into clean water — a bucket, tray, or directly into the pond is fine.
  4. Keep them in shade for the first few hours while they rehydrate.

Most plants will begin to firm up and lift within a short time.

Planting After Delivery

Once rehydrated, plants can be positioned or planted as appropriate for your pond.

  • Avoid placing plants directly into strong moving water, such as near waterfalls or pump outlets.
  • If using baskets, fill with aquatic compost and firm the plant gently into place.
  • Add a thin layer of washed gravel to the surface to help keep the water clear.
  • Introduce plants into the pond gradually, especially if water temperatures differ significantly from storage water.

If you are unsure about placement depth, refer to our Pond Planting Zones Guide for detailed guidance.

Seasonal Appearance

Pond plants vary naturally throughout the year.

Depending on the season, they may be:

  • Smaller in early spring
  • More vigorous and expansive in summer
  • Slightly different in shape or spread from photographs

This variation reflects natural growth cycles rather than plant health. Given time and the right conditions, plants will establish and grow according to the season.
