Pondside Fern Collection

    Description

Ideal for shaded or partially shaded ponds, woodland gardens, and damp pond margins.

Create a calm, woodland feel around shaded ponds with this curated collection of hardy marginal ferns. Selected for reliable growth in lower light, these ferns bring texture, structure, and year-round interest to pond edges and boggy margins.

Ferns provide excellent pondside shelter for birds, frogs and newts If you are able to add attractive rocks, branches or logs you will not only give them somewhere to hibernate but will also encourage insect populations.

Each Pondside Fern Collection is handpicked by our expert growers from our wider range of hardy pondside and marginal ferns. Rather than relying on a fixed plant list, selections are made at the time of dispatch based on plant condition, seasonal growth stage and overall garden and pondside suitability.

By selecting ferns in this way, we’re able to offer a balanced, high-quality mix that is more cost effective than choosing plants individually, while ensuring you receive healthy, UK-grown ferns that are looking their best and ready to establish in current conditions.

      • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained soil
      • Hardiness: Hardy in most parts of the UK, tolerating temperatures down to -15C to -10C
      • Feeding: Ferns typically obtain all the nutrients they need from pond water and surrounding soil, and do not usually require additional feeding
        Care Instructions

Ferns are hardy in most parts of the UK and will not normally require any feeding.  They are also generally not prone to pests of diseases.  You may choose to clear bracken and compost it at the end of the season, but we would encourage you to leave it as it falls as this will be far better for wildlife.

        Growers Tips
        • For a natural woodland look, plant ferns in informal groups rather than evenly spaced rows. This mimics how they grow in the wild and creates a softer pond edge.
        • Fern fronds look best when allowed to arch naturally over stones or water. Position plants slightly back from the pond edge and let them grow forward.
        • Mixing ferns with mossy rocks, driftwood or fallen branches enhances both visual interest and wildlife value.
        • Most pondside ferns are slow to establish but long-lived. Avoid disturbing them once planted — they will reward patience with strong, reliable growth year after year.
        • In autumn, consider leaving faded fronds in place. They provide winter protection for the plant crown and valuable shelter for insects and amphibians.
        Wildlife Tips
        • Ferns provide cool, shaded cover around ponds, helping amphibians regulate body temperature during warmer months.
        • Leaving leaf litter beneath ferns creates overwintering habitat for insects, which in turn supports birds and other wildlife.
        • Positioning ferns near gently sloping pond edges makes it easier for frogs and newts to move between land and water.
        • Avoid cutting back all foliage in autumn — decaying fronds play an important role in a healthy pond-edge ecosystem.
        Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
        Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

        Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
