Hessian Basket Liners (10 Pack) – 45cm Squares

    Description

A simple, natural solution for cleaner planting.

These 45cm hessian squares are designed for lining aquatic planting baskets, helping to contain soil and compost while still allowing water and oxygen to circulate freely around the roots.

Particularly useful when planting marginals and other aquatic species in open-mesh or coarser baskets, hessian liners help reduce soil loss into the pond and minimise temporary clouding when baskets are lowered into the water.

The breathable, biodegradable weave forms a natural barrier that supports stable planting without restricting root development. Over time, as plants establish, the hessian gradually softens and integrates within the basket.

Suitable for ornamental and wildlife-friendly ponds, these liners create a tidier finish — especially where baskets are visible above the waterline or along pond edges.

For Finofil aquatic baskets: liners are optional rather than essential. Finofil’s fine mesh is designed to retain aquatic soil, but some growers still choose to add hessian for additional containment or in ponds with active fish.

Supplied as 45cm × 45cm squares, they can be used whole or trimmed to size for smaller baskets.

      Product Details
      • Pack size: 10 hessian liners
      • Size: 45cm × 45cm squares (approx. 18”)
      • Material: Natural hessian (jute)
      • Use: Lining aquatic baskets to reduce soil loss while allowing water circulation
      Growing Instructions
      • Place the hessian square into your empty basket, centred so it overlaps evenly on all sides
      • Press into the corners so it forms a liner shape
      • Add peat-free aquatic soil, position the plant, and firm gently around the roots
      • Fold excess hessian inward (or trim if preferred)
      • Top-dress with aquatic gravel to further reduce disturbance and keep the finish neat
      • Lower the basket slowly into the pond
      Care Instructions
      • Hessian is a natural material and may gradually soften over time as roots establish
      • If you repot annually, replace the liner during repotting for a clean, tidy basket
      • Store unused liners dry to prevent early degradation
      • Wash hands after handling compost/soil and planting materials
      Growers Tips
      • Open-mesh baskets: liners make the biggest difference here, helping keep fine soil contained
      • Finofil baskets: not required, but useful if you want extra containment or you have fish that disturb baskets
      • You can cut one 45cm square down for smaller baskets, or use it to wrap a root ball during dividing/repotting
      • Pair with a gravel top layer for the cleanest finish and best stability
      Wildlife Tips
      • Keeping soil in the basket helps maintain calmer, clearer water, which benefits pond life
      • Liners are a simple way to reduce disturbance during planting and repotting — particularly in wildlife ponds where you want to avoid unnecessary clouding.
      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
