Wildlife Pond Plants Collection

    Description

The Wildlife Pond Plants Collection brings together a carefully selected mix of marginal pond plants chosen specifically for their value to wildlife. These plants help create the conditions needed for a thriving pond ecosystem while also benefiting the wider garden and surrounding environment.

All plants in this collection are marginal species, growing around the pond edge or in shallow water. They provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, resting and breeding sites for dragonflies, and cover for amphibians as they move between pond and land. Submerged stems and dense foliage also support a wide range of pond insects, forming the foundation of a healthy food web.

While wildlife benefit is the primary focus, these plants also contribute structure, height, texture and seasonal colour to the pond edge. Flowering typically occurs from March through to October, depending on species and conditions, ensuring interest across much of the growing season.

This collection is ideal for starting a new wildlife pond or enhancing an existing pond, particularly where biodiversity and natural balance are a priority.

    How our collections are selected

Each Wildlife Pond Plants Collection is handpicked by our expert growers from our wider marginal plant range. Rather than relying on a fixed plant list, selections are made at the time of dispatch based on plant condition, seasonal performance and value to wildlife.

By selecting plants in this way, we’re able to offer a balanced, wildlife-focused mix that is more cost effective than selecting plants individually, while ensuring you receive healthy, UK-grown plants suited to current conditions.

        Growing Instructions

Please follow the instructions on the individual plant labels supplied. The guidance below provides general advice for marginal pond plants.

        Planting depth

        • Marginal plants are best placed on pond edges, shelves or shallow water areas
        • Suitable for planting zones 1–3, from pondside to shallow submerged positions
        • Planting depth is measured from the top of the basket to the water surface

        Sunlight

        • Most wildlife‑friendly marginals perform best in full sun to partial shade
        • Sunny positions encourage flowering and insect activity

        Soil

        • Plant in aquatic compost or soil‑based pond compost only
        • Avoid multi‑purpose composts, which can cloud water and release excess nutrients

        Hardiness

        • Plants in this collection are fully hardy in UK conditions
        • Once established, they tolerate winter cold well when planted at the correct depth
        Care Instructions
        • Allow plants time to establish before judging growth or wildlife activity
        • Remove spent flower stems as needed to encourage further blooms
        • Cut back excessive growth to maintain access to the pond edge

        In autumn:

        • Avoid cutting all growth back too early
        • Leaving stems and foliage provides winter shelter for insects and amphibians
        Growers Tips
        • Combining a variety of plant heights and forms creates more niches for wildlife
        • Mixing flowering and foliage‑rich marginals increases biodiversity
        • Sympathetic placement of logs, stones or rocks around the pond edge can significantly increase shelter and basking areas for amphibians and insects

For the best wildlife outcomes, avoid overly tidy pond margins and allow plants to develop naturally.

        Wildlife Tips

Wildlife pond plants support biodiversity at multiple levels. Flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, while stems and leaves offer perching and breeding sites for dragonflies. Dense marginal growth creates safe routes for frogs, toads and newts as they move between water and land.

A well‑planted wildlife pond also benefits birds, offering drinking water, bathing areas and insect food sources. Over time, this helps create a richer ecosystem not just within the pond, but across the wider garden and surrounding landscape.

By planting wildlife‑friendly marginals, you are helping to create refuges that support declining and endangered species, contributing positively to local biodiversity.

        Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
        Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

        Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
