Amphibious bistort, Polygonum amphibium | Persicaria amphibia

    Description

Amphibious bistort (Polygonum amphibium | Persicaria amphibia) is a versatile marginal pond plant with attractive floating foliage and soft pink flower spikes. Its trailing, elongated stems spread across the water surface, while the bottlebrush-like blooms rise above, adding colour and texture to the pond from July to September.

This fast-growing marginal is suitable for full sun to part shade and can adapt from boggy edges to relatively deep water, up to around 80 cm. The floating leaves help increase surface cover, which can shade the water and reduce excessive light, while the dense growth offers natural shelter for aquatic wildlife.

Amphibious bistort is ideal for wildlife-friendly ponds, naturalistic plantings and larger water features where its vigorous habit can be appreciated. Its combination of decorative pink flowers and spreading foliage makes it a striking choice for softening pond margins and creating a more established, natural look.

      Care Instructions

Amphibious Bistort thrives in full sun to part shade and is ideal for marginals in water gardens or bog landscapes. Start by placing your plant in shallow water, then gradually allow it to grow into deeper water or slowly lower the planting basket over time to accommodate growth. This fast-growing perennial can tolerate water depths up to 80 cm and prefers stable conditions to reach full vigor within a year. Regularly check water levels to ensure your Amphibious Bistort remains partially submerged, promoting healthy trailing stems and vibrant pink flowers from July to September. Its hardy nature makes it low maintenance, but proper water depth adjustment is key for sustained growth and stability at the water's edge.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.
