Branched bur-reed | Sparganium erectum

    Description

Branched bur-reed (Sparganium erectum) is a vigorous native marginal plant, ideal for naturalistic and wildlife-friendly ponds. This fast-growing species quickly forms dense clumps at the water’s edge, helping to create valuable cover and shelter around the margins of lakes, ponds and wetland areas.

Producing distinctive white flower heads from June to August, Branched bur-reed adds seasonal interest and texture to the shallow water zone. It thrives in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for a range of planting schemes, from formal ponds to larger wildlife and landscape projects.

As a native marginal plant, Sparganium erectum contributes to a healthy pond ecosystem by increasing structural diversity and providing habitat around the waterline. Its strong, upright growth makes it especially popular with landscapers looking to establish quick cover and a more natural, established look in and around the pond.

      Care Instructions

Branched bur‑reed (Sparganium erectum) thrives best in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for water gardens and naturalized margins. This marginal plant grows rapidly and can be invasive, so regular monitoring is recommended to manage its spread. Minimal maintenance is needed; simply trim the foliage just above the water surface after it dies back in autumn. This helps keep the plant tidy and promotes healthy growth in the following season. Ideal for creating dense cover for wildfowl and enhancing wetland habitats, Branched bur‑reed establishes quickly and requires little intervention, making it perfect for native planting schemes and water-edge landscaping.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.
