      Growing Instructions

      Before placing the plants in your pond, repot each 9cm plant into a suitable aquatic basket. We recommend a 1 litre aquatic basket filled with aquatic compost and finished with a top dressing of washed aquatic gravel to help hold the compost in place.

      Do not use ordinary multi-purpose compost, as this can release excess nutrients into the pond and may cloud the water.

      Once repotted, place each plant on a suitable pond shelf or shallow-water area at the planting depth shown on the individual plant label supplied. Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

      Most colourful marginals flower most freely in good light. Full sun to partial shade will suit the range from which these collections are selected, although the performance of individual varieties will vary.

      With six individual plants, avoid spacing them mechanically at equal intervals. A mixture of small groups and individual planting positions generally creates a softer, more natural-looking pond edge.

      Care Instructions

      After delivery, unpack the plants promptly and follow our Receiving and Caring for Your Pond Plants guidance.

      Repot the plants before placing them permanently in the pond and ensure each is positioned at the correct depth for the individual variety.

      Remove dead or damaged foliage as required and trim spent flowering stems where appropriate. Different marginal plants emerge, flower and die back at different times, so seasonal variation between the six plants is normal.

      As the plants establish, manage excessive growth where necessary and divide congested plants when they begin to outgrow their baskets.

      Avoid cutting all marginal growth back too early in autumn. Leaving some stems standing through winter can provide useful structure and habitat before old growth is removed ahead of the new growing season.

      Growers Tips

      The six-plant format gives you more freedom to spread planting around the pond. Rather than creating an even ring of plants, use differences in height and form to create small groups and varied planting points.

      Where possible, position taller plants towards the back of wider pond shelves and lower-growing varieties where they will remain visible from your main viewing position.

      If you are adding the collection to an established pond, look for gaps in flowering time, height, colour or foliage rather than simply adding more plants to an already crowded area.

      Wildlife Tips

      Marginal plants create valuable structure where land and water meet. Their stems and foliage can provide shelter for frogs, newts and aquatic invertebrates, while flowering varieties offer feeding opportunities for bees, hoverflies and other visiting insects.

      Spreading planting across several areas of the pond edge can also create a greater variety of sheltered spaces and routes between the water and surrounding garden.

      For greater habitat diversity, combine marginal planting with submerged growth and some surface cover while retaining areas of open water.

      Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

      30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

      If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

      Returns & problems on arrival

      Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

      Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

      If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

      We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
