Cotton grass, Bog cotton, Scirpus angustifolius | Eriophorum angustifolium

    Description

Cotton grass, also known as Bog cotton (Scirpus angustifolius | Eriophorum angustifolium), is a beautiful native marginal plant ideal for softening the edges of wildlife ponds and boggy areas. It forms graceful, grass-like foliage topped with distinctive fluffy white, cotton-like heads from June to September, creating a natural, moorland feel that works well in both traditional and contemporary pond designs.

This slow-growing marginal thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for many UK gardens. Historically, its woolly seed heads were used for stuffing pillows and making candle wicks, adding a touch of heritage interest to your planting scheme.

As a marginal pond plant, Cotton grass helps provide structure and shelter around the water’s edge, supporting a more natural pond environment and complementing other native species in wildlife-friendly gardens.

      Care Instructions

Cotton Grass (Eriophorum angustifolium) is a low-maintenance marginal plant that thrives in full sun to part shade. Its slow growth rate means it requires minimal attention. To keep your Cotton Grass looking neat and healthy, trim the foliage just above the water surface after it has died back in the Autumn. This simple step helps tidy the plant and promotes healthy growth the following season. Ideal for wetlands and garden borders, Cotton Grass adds a natural, textured appearance with its fluffy white seed heads from June to September. No special watering or fertilizing is necessary, making it perfect for gardeners seeking an easy-care, attractive addition to damp or marginal areas.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.
