Dutch rush | Equisetum hyemale

    Description

Dutch rush (Equisetum hyemale) is a striking evergreen marginal plant that brings strong architectural structure to the pond edge all year round. Its upright, jointed stems create a bold, modern look, adding texture and vertical interest in both formal and natural-style water gardens.

This hardy marginal thrives in full sun to part shade and is noted for its exceptional toughness, remaining reliable even in very cold conditions. With a medium growth rate and distinctive brown tones, Dutch rush is ideal for planting in shallow water or damp soil around the pond margin.

As a marginal pond plant, Equisetum hyemale helps break up the water’s edge, offering shelter and cover for aquatic wildlife and contributing to a more natural, wildlife-friendly pond environment.

      Care Instructions

Dutch rush (Equisetum hyemale) thrives best in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings. This medium-growth marginals plant benefits from leaving its old growth standing through the winter months to protect it from harsh weather. In early spring, wait until new shoots reach about 15cm (6 inches) tall before cutting back the old stems. This helps promote healthy new growth for the season. Dutch rush is an evergreen plant that adds year-round texture and natural elegance to borders, rock gardens, and woodland beds. It is low maintenance and well-suited to gardeners seeking a resilient, attractive plant that thrives in a range of light conditions. Ensure moderate watering and suitable soil drainage to keep your Dutch rush healthy and vibrant throughout the year.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
