Flying Hedgehogs, Beaver dam plant | Juncus ensifolius

    Description

Flying Hedgehogs, Beaver dam plant (Juncus ensifolius) is a distinctive marginal pond plant with bright green, grass-like foliage topped by numerous very dark brown seed heads. This striking contrast gives the plant its unusual common name and makes it a real talking point at the water’s edge.

Ideal for planting in shallow water or damp margins, this marginal plant thrives in full sun to part shade and has a naturally slow growth rate, helping it stay neat and compact. Flowering in July and August, Juncus ensifolius adds late-season interest and texture to wildlife-friendly ponds and water features.

Like many marginal pond plants, Flying Hedgehogs helps create valuable structure around the pond edge, offering shelter for aquatic wildlife and contributing to a more natural, balanced pond environment.

      Care Instructions

Care Instructions for Flying Hedgehogs (Juncus ensifolius)

Flying Hedgehogs thrive best in full sun to part shade, making them versatile additions to your pond or water garden margins. This slow-growing marginal plant requires minimal maintenance, perfect for both beginners and experienced gardeners. In autumn, after the foliage has naturally died back, trim the plant just above the water surface to keep it tidy while leaving some material intact. This leftover foliage helps protect new shoots during the colder months, promoting healthy growth in spring. Regular trimming also encourages the vibrant green foliage and distinctive brown seed heads to flourish each summer. By following these simple care steps, your Flying Hedgehogs will add a graceful, natural touch to your aquatic landscape year after year.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
