Greater reedmace | Typha latifolia

    Description

Greater reedmace (Typha latifolia) is the classic common bulrush, ideal for creating a bold, natural look around large ponds and lakes. This vigorous marginal plant forms tall, upright stems topped with distinctive dark chocolate-brown seed heads from July to September, adding strong vertical structure and late-season interest.

Best grown in full sun at the water’s edge or in shallow margins, Greater reedmace is a powerful coloniser with an invasive growth rate, so it is not recommended for small garden ponds. In larger water bodies, its dense stands can help provide shelter and cover for aquatic wildlife and contribute to a more natural, wildlife-friendly shoreline.

Choose Typha latifolia if you are looking to establish a traditional reedbed effect in a spacious setting, where its height, rich brown flower spikes and robust habit can be fully appreciated.

      Care Instructions

Greater reedmace (Typha latifolia) thrives best in full sun, making it ideal for large water features and lake margins. This vigorous marginal plant grows rapidly and can become invasive, so regular maintenance helps keep it under control. To maintain a tidy appearance and support healthy growth, cut back the foliage before new spring growth begins. The attractive dark‑chocolate seed heads provide seasonal interest from July to September and can be left standing over winter for added wildlife habitat. However, it is best to remove seed heads that fall into the water to prevent unwanted spreading. With proper care, Typha latifolia will create a striking, low-maintenance natural border that enhances your water garden while supporting ecological balance.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.
