Marsh marigold, King cup | Caltha palustris

    Description

Marsh marigold, King cup (Caltha palustris) is a classic UK marginal pond plant, valued for its early spring display. Once established, it produces a mass of bright yellow flowers in March and April, forming an almost ball-like splash of colour at the water’s edge.

This slow-growing marginal thrives in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for a range of pond positions. Plant Marsh marigold in the shallow margins of your wildlife pond or water garden to soften hard edges and add vibrant seasonal interest.

As a marginal plant, Caltha palustris helps create natural cover around the pond edge, offering shelter for aquatic wildlife and contributing to a more balanced pond environment. Its early flowers can also provide one of the first sources of pollen in the pond area each year, supporting a healthy, wildlife-friendly garden.

      Care Instructions

Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) thrives best in full sun to part shade, making it perfect for brightening both sunny and lightly shaded areas in your garden.

After its vibrant yellow flowers bloom in March and April, expect most of the foliage to die back naturally. To keep your plant neat and encourage the possibility of a second flowering, gently remove any dead leaves.

This slow-growing marginal plant is low-maintenance and adds cheerful color to lawns, borders, and wet areas. Regularly tidying up after flowering helps maintain a healthy and attractive plant year after year.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.
