Norfolk reed, Common reed, Phragmites communis, | Phragmites australis

    Description

Norfolk reed (Phragmites communis / Phragmites australis) is a vigorous marginal grass, ideal for adding height, movement and structure around the edges of a garden pond or wildlife water feature. This strong-growing reed produces broad, glossy green leaves that turn an attractive brown in autumn, extending seasonal interest well into the colder months.

From August to October, Norfolk reed carries tall plumes of purple to violet flowers, giving a natural, reedbed look that suits both formal and informal pond designs. It thrives in full sun to part shade and is known for its fast growth, making it useful where quick cover is needed at the water’s edge.

As a marginal pond plant, Phragmites communis helps create valuable shelter and cover in and around the water, supporting a more diverse and wildlife-friendly pond environment.

      Care Instructions

      Norfolk Reed Care Instructions:

Norfolk Reed (Phragmites communis / Phragmites australis) thrives best in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings. To maintain healthy growth, trim the reed just above the water surface in autumn to prepare it for winter. Alternatively, you can leave the attractive seed heads to enjoy visual interest throughout the colder months. Before new growth begins in spring, cut back the old foliage to encourage fresh, vigorous shoots. This fast-growing marginal plant requires minimal maintenance and is ideal for wetland gardens, pond edges, and erosion control. Regular trimming helps keep the plant tidy and promotes sustained vitality, ensuring your garden benefits from its striking texture and seasonal color changes year-round.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.
