Nymphaea Madame Wilfron Gonnere

    Description

Nymphaea ‘Madame Wilfron Gonnere’ is a classic pink water lily, ideal for adding elegant colour and structure to a garden pond. This lily produces large, double, rose-pink blooms from June to September, creating a long-lasting display across the summer months.

The flowers of Nymphaea ‘Madame Wilfron Gonnere’ are complemented by attractive floating foliage that helps to soften the water’s surface. As a traditional hardy water lily for full sun, it is well suited to ornamental ponds where it can be enjoyed from the water’s edge or nearby seating areas.

Like other water lilies, this medium-growth variety contributes useful surface cover, which can help shade the water and provide shelter for pond life. A reliable choice for those looking to introduce a romantic pink water lily to their pond, it brings both beauty and a more natural feel to the water garden.

      Growing Instructions

Open your water lily as soon as possible after delivery, remove any packaging, and place it into clean water to rehydrate before final placement. A little flattening from transit is normal and should improve quickly once the plant has water and a short rest in shade. For fuller arrival guidance, see Receiving and Caring for Your Pond Plants.

Plant your medium water lily in a still, sunny part of the pond where it will have enough room to develop a good spread across the surface. Medium lilies are ideal for most average garden ponds. Always follow the planting depth shown on the plant label provided. Depth is measured from the top of the basket or soil surface to the water surface.

All Edenmere water lilies are supplied in aquatic baskets and can be placed directly into the pond. If the plant is already in active growth and the final depth is significantly deeper than its current level, lower it in stages so the leaves can continue to float naturally while it settles. Keep lilies away from fountains, waterfalls, splashing outlets and strong movement, as they flower best in calm water. Once the basket is in its final position, avoid moving it unnecessarily. For help with depth, shelves and deep-water planting, see Pond Planting Zones Guide and Deep Water Planting Guide. For overall planting balance, see How Many Pond Plants Do I Need?.

      Care Instructions

Hardy water lilies are generally straightforward to care for once established. Through the growing season, remove any yellowing, damaged or tired leaves, and trim away spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued flowering. In autumn, clear away foliage as it dies back naturally so the plant goes into winter cleanly. Water lilies are usually resilient, but routine tidying helps reduce stress and keeps the crown in better condition.

Feeding is usually beneficial in spring, especially in newer ponds, in baskets that have been in place for some time, or where growth and flowering seem weaker. A suitable aquatic fertiliser is the best choice. In richer, more mature ponds, feeding may be needed less often, so it should be guided by plant vigour rather than treated as essential in every case. If the basket becomes congested and flowering declines, the plant can be lifted and divided at the appropriate time and replanted using proper aquatic compost only in an aquatic basket. For products to support this, see our Aquatic Plant Fertiliser and Aquatic Potting Compost ranges.

Once a water lily is in its final position, it is usually best not to move it unnecessarily. Lilies prefer to settle and establish in one place. In winter, most hardy lilies can simply be left in the pond at their correct depth while they die back naturally; there is usually no special winter action required beyond removing dead foliage and leaving the basket undisturbed unless division is genuinely needed.

Water lilies are generally robust, but occasional problems can occur. The most common issues include water lily aphids, water lily beetle, China Mark moth and leaf spot. In many cases, removing affected leaves promptly and keeping the plant growing strongly is enough. More serious problems such as crown rot are less common but should be dealt with quickly by removing and destroying the infected plant. If your pond contains fish or koi, be aware that leaves, flowers and even baskets may be disturbed or damaged, so some protection may be sensible in vulnerable ponds. For broader aftercare, see Receiving and Caring for Your Pond Plants.

      Growers Tips

Medium water lilies often make the best all-round choice for average garden ponds, offering a strong floral display, useful summer cover and a natural focal point without the scale of the largest varieties. They usually perform best when there is enough open water around them to develop properly, so avoid packing the surface too tightly with multiple floating-leaved plants. It is often better to build pond balance with one well-placed lily, Oxygenating Pond Plants, and a thoughtful group of marginals than to overcrowd the central water.

If the plant is making leaves but not flowering well, check light levels, planting depth, feeding and whether the basket may now be congested. Because medium lilies often become a central structural plant in the pond, it is worth giving them enough room from the start and letting them mature naturally. For wider guidance on pond balance and surface coverage, see Balanced Pond Planting Guide and How Many Pond Plants Do I Need?.

      Wildlife Tips

Medium water lilies can play an important role in creating balanced summer cover in an average garden pond. Their floating leaves provide shade and shelter beneath the surface, helping create a more stable and wildlife-friendly environment while also softening the visual appearance of the pond. They work best as part of a layered planting scheme with Oxygenating Pond Plants below, marginals around the shelves, and enough open water left visible to stop the pond feeling closed over.

Because medium lilies can become one of the main sources of surface cover, it is worth checking the overall balance of the pond as plants mature. Aim for healthy summer cover without losing all open water. If fish are present, new leaves and flowers may need occasional protection where disturbance is a problem.
