Small Starter Pond Collection - With a Lily

    Description

The Small Pond Starter Collection – With a Lily is designed to help you create a balanced, visually striking pond in a compact space. It is ideal for small garden ponds, wildlife ponds and container ponds such as bowls, tubs and troughs, where space is limited but impact still matters.

Each collection contains six plants supplied in 1 litre pots, including one deep water plant in the form of a miniature water lily. This will most commonly be Pygmaea Alba, Pygmaea Helvola or a Xiafei, depending on availability. These varieties are chosen for their compact growth habit, typically spreading around 30–50 cm, making them particularly well suited to smaller ponds and containers.

Alongside the lily, the collection may include a complementary mix of marginal, floating and oxygenating plants. Together, these provide structure, colour, foliage contrast and seasonal interest, while also helping to support pond balance and wildlife.

Although compact in scale, this collection still delivers the enjoyment, visual satisfaction and ecological benefits associated with pond planting. It is an excellent option for anyone wanting to experience a pond without committing to a larger build, and works especially well in patios, courtyards and even balcony settings where conditions allow.

Each Small Pond Starter Collection is handpicked by our expert growers from our wider aquatic plant range. Rather than working to a fixed plant list, selections are made at the time of dispatch based on plant condition, seasonal performance and suitability for smaller ponds and containers.

By selecting plants in this way, we are able to offer a balanced, ready-to-plant mix that is more cost effective than selecting plants individually, while ensuring you receive healthy, UK-grown plants suited to current conditions.

      Growing Instructions

Please follow the instructions on the individual plant labels supplied. The guidance below provides general advice for small ponds and container water gardens.

      Placement and depth

      • Suitable for planting zones 1–4, from pond edge to deeper water
      • Place the water lily in the deepest part of the pond or container
      • Marginal plants can be positioned around the edges to soften the outline

Container ponds usually perform best in a sunny position, which supports flowering and healthy growth.

      Soil and feeding

      • Plants are supplied in aquatic baskets and can be placed directly into the pond
      • Additional soil is not required unless repotting in future
      • Water lilies may benefit from occasional aquatic fertiliser tablets during the growing season
      Care Instructions
      • Allow plants time to establish before judging flowering or spread
      • Remove spent flowers and excess foliage as needed
      • Top up water levels during warm weather, particularly in container ponds

All plants in this collection are hardy, easy-care perennials with good resistance to pests and diseases.

      Growers Tips
      • Miniature water lilies provide surface shade, helping to moderate water temperature and reduce algae
      • Avoid overcrowding; water lilies perform best when given space to spread naturally
      • Position container ponds where the flowers can be enjoyed up close
      Wildlife Tips

Even a small pond with a water lily can offer valuable benefits to wildlife. Lily leaves provide shade and cover for aquatic life, while flowers attract insects that in turn support birds and amphibians.

Combined with marginal and oxygenating plants, a miniature lily helps create vertical structure within the pond, supporting a more stable and diverse ecosystem, even in the smallest of spaces.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
