Snake's head fritillary | Fritillaria meleagris

    Description

The Snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) is a distinctive spring bulb prized for its elegant, nodding flowers. Each bloom has a unique chequerboard pattern in shades of purple or white, adding unusual texture and interest to damp borders, meadow-style plantings, and the edges of ponds or streams. This moisture-loving plant is well suited to full sun to part shade, making it versatile for many garden settings.

Flowering from April to May, Snake's head fritillary brings early-season colour just as the garden is waking up, with its red-toned purple flowers standing out against fresh spring foliage. As a moisture lover, it is ideal for reliably damp soil where it can establish slowly over time. Like many spring bulbs and moisture-loving plants, it can contribute to a more wildlife-friendly garden by offering natural cover and seasonal interest around water features.

                Care Instructions

Care Instructions for Snake's Head Fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris):

Plant your Snake's Head Fritillary in an area that receives full sun to part shade to ensure optimal growth. This moisture-loving bulb thrives best in consistently moist soil, so water regularly to keep the soil evenly damp but not waterlogged. Because it has a slow growth rate, be patient as it establishes. In autumn, trim back any dead foliage to maintain garden tidiness and support healthy regrowth the following season. This low-maintenance plant is perfect for adding unique spring color with its delicate, checkerboard-patterned flowers. Avoid letting the soil dry out to keep your fritillary healthy and blooming year after year.

                Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
                Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

                Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
