Soft rush, Smooth rush | Juncus effusus

    Description

Soft rush (Smooth rush) – Juncus effusus is a versatile marginal pond plant with very erect, dark green stems topped with attractive brown seed heads from June to August. Forming dense clumps that spread by creeping rhizomes, this fast-growing rush brings strong vertical structure and natural texture to the pond edge or boggy areas.

This hardy marginal thrives in full sun to part shade, making it suitable for a wide range of UK pond and wetland-style plantings. The evergreen foliage helps provide year-round interest and contributes useful cover around the water’s edge.

As a marginal pond plant, Juncus effusus offers valuable habitat and shelter in and around the shallows, helping to create a more natural, wildlife-friendly pond environment. Historically used for mat-making and as floor rushes in Shakespearean times, Soft rush is both practical and ornamental, fitting beautifully into traditional and contemporary garden ponds alike.

      Care Instructions

Soft Rush (Juncus effusus) Care Instructions:

Soft Rush is an evergreen marginal plant that thrives in full sun to part shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It grows quickly, forming dense, attractive clumps that add texture and greenery to borders and naturalized beds. To maintain healthy growth and promote fresh shoots, trim the stems back in early spring. This simple pruning helps rejuvenate the plant for the growing season. Soft Rush requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a fast-growing, resilient plant. Perfect for adding rustic charm and a natural soft green backdrop, it works well in moist garden areas and complements a variety of plant palettes.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.
