Sweet flag | Acorus calamus

    Description

Sweet flag (Acorus calamus) is a classic marginal pond plant with striking dark green, iris-like foliage that brings strong vertical structure to the water’s edge. Growing from creeping rhizomes that run just below the surface of the soil, it forms attractive clumps, ideal for softening pond margins and naturalising around wildlife ponds.

This medium-growth marginal plant thrives in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of UK garden ponds. In June and July, Sweet flag produces small, green, horn-shaped blooms that add subtle seasonal interest without overwhelming other planting.

As a marginal pond plant, Acorus calamus helps create valuable habitat around the pond edge, offering cover and shelter for aquatic wildlife and contributing to a more balanced, natural-looking pond environment.

      Care Instructions

Sweet flag (Acorus calamus) thrives in full sun to part shade, making it suitable for various pond environments. This marginal aquatic plant requires little maintenance and has a medium growth rate, steadily enhancing your water garden with its lush foliage. In autumn, once the foliage dies back, trim the plant just above the water surface to keep it tidy. Leave some material on the rhizomes to protect new shoots and encourage healthy growth in the following season. Regular pruning helps maintain a neat, natural border without overcrowding your pond. Ideal for natural pond margins and water features, sweet flag adds beauty with minimal effort, making it a perfect choice for gardeners seeking an attractive, low-maintenance aquatic plant.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
