Trapdoor Snail | Viviparus viviparus

    Description

The Trapdoor Snail (Viviparus viviparus) is a hardworking pond mollusc that helps keep water clearer by grazing on algae along the bottom of the pond. Ideal for wildlife and ornamental ponds, these snails are naturally adapted to life underwater and should be treated in the same way as fish, as they breathe through gills rather than coming to the surface for air.

Trapdoor snails are a useful addition to a balanced pond ecosystem, contributing to the natural clean-up of organic debris on the pond floor. As they move slowly across the substrate, they help reduce the build-up of algae and detritus, supporting a healthier environment for fish and aquatic plants. Suitable for ponds in sun or shade, Trapdoor Snail populations can be adjusted to suit the size of your pond, making them a flexible and low-maintenance choice for UK gardeners.

                Care Instructions

                Trapdoor Snail Care Instructions:

                • Stocking Density: For optimal pond health, maintain approximately 5 Trapdoor Snails per square meter.
                • Habitat: These snails possess gills and require an aquatic environment similar to fish, thriving in still or slow-moving freshwater ponds.
                • Environment: They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water and contribute naturally to controlling algae growth by grazing on pond bottoms.
                • Lighting: Trapdoor Snails are adaptable and can live in both sunlit and shaded pond areas.
                • Maintenance: Regular pond care, like removing debris and monitoring water quality, supports your snails’ health and effectiveness.

By following these care guidelines, you ensure your Trapdoor Snails help maintain a balanced and clear pond ecosystem efficiently and sustainably.

                Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
                Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

                Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.

For full details, please see our Refunds & Returns Policy.
