Variegated sweet flag | Acorus calamus variegatus

    Description

Variegated sweet flag (Acorus calamus variegatus) is an attractive marginal pond plant with striking green and cream vertically striped leaves. Grown at the water’s edge, it brings elegant structure and year-round interest to wildlife ponds, formal pools, and water features.

This medium-growing marginal thrives in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile choice for many pond positions. In June and July it produces discreet flowers, while the foliage offers a gentle citrus scent that adds an extra sensory dimension to your pondside planting.

As a marginal plant, Variegated sweet flag helps soften hard pond edges, provides shelter for aquatic wildlife, and contributes to a more natural-looking pond margin. Its bold, variegated leaves contrast beautifully with other green pond plants, making Acorus calamus variegatus a useful choice for adding texture and light to your planting scheme.

      Care Instructions

Variegated Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus variegatus) thrives in full sun to part shade, making it versatile for various garden locations. This medium-growing marginal plant requires little maintenance, perfect for both beginner and experienced gardeners. In autumn, after the foliage has naturally died back, trim the plant just above the water surface to keep it tidy. Leaving a small amount of trimmed material helps protect new shoots and encourages healthy growth in the next season. Its low-maintenance nature and adaptability make Variegated Sweet Flag an excellent choice for enhancing water gardens, pond edges, and damp borders with attractive, variegated foliage and a gentle citrus fragrance.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
