Water Hawthorn | Aponogeton distachyos

    Description

Water hawthorn (Aponogeton distachyos) is a striking deep water pond plant, ideal for adding early and late-season interest to your garden pond. Producing elegant white flowers from March to July and again from September to December, it brings welcome colour when many other pond plants are dormant, and is a perfect partner plant for Lilies.

This medium-growing deep water plant thrives in full sun to part shade, making it versatile for a range of pond positions. Water hawthorn provides valuable surface cover, helping to shade the water and reduce excessive algae growth, while its foliage and flowers add texture and movement to the pond surface.

As a deep water plant, Aponogeton distachyos contributes to a balanced pond environment, offering an important shelter for spawning aquatic life and enhancing the natural look of wildlife-friendly ponds. A brief die-back period in August is normal, after which fresh growth and flowers will return.

      Care Instructions

Water Hawthorn thrives best in full sun to part shade, making it a versatile addition to your aquatic garden. Plant it in still water, ensuring it is positioned away from splashing fountains to prevent damage. Gradually lower the plant into the water so its leaves can comfortably reach the surface within a few days.

This deep water plant has a medium growth rate and will fill your water feature in just a few months. Expect its foliage to naturally die back during summer, but don’t worry – new leaves will quickly regrow. Any leaves damaged during transit can be removed to keep your plant looking vibrant.

With care tailored to its needs, Water Hawthorn brings elegant blooms and lush foliage to ponds and water gardens, especially in early spring and late autumn.

      Growers Tips

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

For full guidance, please see Track My Order.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.

For full details, please see our Refunds & Returns Policy.
