Water soldier | Stratiotes aloides

    Description

Water soldier (Stratiotes aloides) is an unusual native floating pond plant with striking, long, narrow, serrated leaves that add strong architectural interest to the water’s surface. This floater thrives in full sun to part shade and is ideal for naturalistic ponds and wildlife-friendly water gardens.

In summer, from June to August, Water soldier produces small white flowers that bring a delicate contrast to its bold foliage. As a floating plant, Stratiotes aloides helps provide surface cover, which can reduce light penetration and support clearer water conditions in many ponds. The dense rosettes also offer valuable shelter for aquatic wildlife, creating shaded areas and hiding places beneath the leaves.

Best suited to ponds where its roots can reach soil or mulm at the base, Water soldier is a medium growth rate floater that can become a long-term feature in a balanced pond planting scheme.

              Care Instructions

Lighting: Water Soldier thrives in full sun to part shade, making it versatile for various pond locations.

Growth and Maintenance: This medium-growing floating plant naturally dies back in the colder months. Allow the old foliage to die back and rot away naturally in autumn.

Seasonal Cycle: New plants will emerge and rise to the surface in spring, producing small white flowers between June and August. This natural cycle supports healthy pond ecology and reduces maintenance.

Placement: Its roots should be anchored to the pond bottom or mulch, helping maintain a stable and natural aquatic environment.

Enjoy the elegant, serrated leaves and delicate blooms of Water Soldier by incorporating this low-maintenance floater into your water garden for year-round interest with minimal effort.

              Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
              Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

For full details, please see our Shipping Policy.

              Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.

Please do not send anything back unless we have agreed this with you in writing first.
