Wildlife Pond Plant Kit for Ponds up to 0.5m² | Grower’s Choice

    Description

The Wildlife Pond Plant Kit for Ponds up to 0.5m² provides three carefully selected marginal plants for creating a more natural and wildlife-friendly pond edge. It is well suited to compact wildlife ponds or for adding greater planting variety to an established pond.

Marginal plants form the important transition between water and land. Their flowers can provide nectar and pollen for visiting insects, while their stems and foliage create shelter, cover and resting places for amphibians, dragonflies and other pond life. They also soften the pond edge and help a new pond develop a more established appearance.

Each kit contains three UK-grown marginal plants supplied in 1 litre Finofil aquatic baskets. They arrive ready to place at the planting depths shown on their individual plant labels, without needing to be repotted first.

This is a Grower’s Choice kit. Plants are selected at the time of dispatch according to their health, seasonal performance and wildlife value, rather than from a fixed species list. This allows our growers to choose strong plants that are well suited to current growing conditions. The varieties supplied will therefore vary, and product images show examples of the type of selection you may receive.

This kit contains marginal plants only. Depending on the size and design of your pond, you may also wish to add suitable oxygenators, floating plants , water lilies or compact deep-water plants to create planting at different levels.

Plant varieties will vary according to season, availability and plant quality at the time of dispatch. Images are for illustration only.

If you order more than one kit at the same time, each kit may contain the same plant selection because orders are prepared from the strongest varieties available at that point in the season.

      Growing Instructions

Always follow the planting-depth guidance on the individual plant labels supplied. Different marginal plants prefer different water depths, even when included in the same kit.

      1. Plan the planting positions

Arrange the plants around the pond edge, on suitable shelves or in other shallow-water positions. Check that the intended location provides the depth and light conditions shown on each plant label.

      2. Check the planting depths

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface. Position each plant separately according to its label rather than placing all three at the same depth automatically.

      3. Place the baskets

The plants are supplied in 1 litre Finofil aquatic baskets and do not need repotting before use. Place each basket upright on a stable surface so that it cannot tip or slide into deeper water.

      4. Arrange the planting

For a natural appearance, stagger the plants around the pond margin rather than positioning them in a perfectly straight line. Allow enough space for each plant to develop as it becomes established.

      5. Add aquatic gravel if required

A thin layer of washed aquatic gravel can be added to the surface of each basket. This provides a neat finish, helps retain the aquatic compost and reduces disturbance in the water. Avoid covering the crown or emerging shoots.

      6. Allow the plants to establish

Aquatic plants vary naturally with the season. They may arrive compact, recently cut back or without flowers, particularly early or late in the growing season. Allow them time to establish before assessing their eventual height, spread or flowering performance.

      Care Instructions
      • Keep each plant at the depth shown on its individual label
      • Ensure pondside plants and shallow baskets do not dry out during warm weather
      • Remove damaged foliage and spent flowers when necessary
      • Leave removed plant cuttings and other plant material beside the pond for 24 hours before disposing of or composting it, giving any small pond creatures time to return to the water
      • Control excessive growth if a plant begins to dominate a compact pond
      • Divide or repot plants when they become congested in their baskets
      • Avoid adding general-purpose garden fertiliser to the pond
      • If feeding is required, use only a fertiliser specifically formulated for aquatic plants

In autumn, avoid cutting back every stem at once. Where appropriate, leave some upright stems in place over winter to provide shelter for insects. Excessive dead growth should be removed before it falls into the water, with the remaining old stems cut back as new growth begins in spring.

      Growers Tips

Position taller or more upright plants towards the back of the pond edge and lower-growing plants towards the front, where the varieties supplied allow.

Avoid crowding all three baskets into one small area. Leaving some space between them gives the plants room to mature and creates a more varied, natural-looking margin.

Washed aquatic gravel is a useful finishing touch. It helps keep compost in place, makes the baskets less visually prominent and can reduce disturbance when wildlife enters or leaves the water.

This is a marginal planting kit rather than a complete planting scheme. For greater variety through the pond, combine it with appropriately sized oxygenators or other plants suited to deeper water.

      Wildlife Tips

Marginal planting creates valuable cover at the point where the pond meets the surrounding garden. Flowers can support bees, hoverflies and other pollinating insects, while foliage and stems provide shelter and resting places for amphibians, dragonflies and damselflies.

Where possible, include a gently sloping edge, stones or another secure route into and out of the pond. This is particularly important in compact ponds with steep or smooth sides.

Avoid pesticides, herbicides and unnecessary pond chemicals. Leaving part of the pond edge slightly informal, with some surrounding vegetation and seasonal stems retained, usually provides more wildlife value than keeping every area closely trimmed.

A compact wildlife pond can still provide drinking and bathing water for birds and valuable habitat for insects and amphibians, particularly when it connects with planting and shelter elsewhere in the garden.

      Ordering, Shipping, Tracking and Returns
      Ordering & delivery

Some products are ready for immediate dispatch, while others are sold for a later delivery period so that they can reach you in good condition and at the right point in the growing season.

The expected delivery period for the product or variant you choose will be shown below the Add to basket button and again in the basket and checkout.

30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

      Returns & problems on arrival

Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
