    Marginal plants form the important transition between water and the surrounding garden. Their flowers can provide nectar and pollen for visiting insects, while stems and foliage create shelter, resting places and routes between water and land for amphibians, dragonflies and other pond life. They also bring height, texture and seasonal interest to the pond edge.

    Each kit contains six UK-grown marginal plants supplied established in 1 litre Finofil aquatic baskets. Unlike smaller nursery-potted plants, these plants do not normally need repotting before being added to the pond. Once unpacked and rehydrated, they can be positioned at the planting depth shown on their individual plant labels.

    The six plants are selected as a Grower’s Choice collection. Rather than using a fixed species list, our growers choose plants at the time of dispatch according to their health, seasonal performance and wildlife value.       This kit contains marginal pond plants only. Water lilies, deep-water plants, floating plants and additional oxygenating plants are not included.

      Growing Instructions

      Open and unpack your plants promptly after delivery. Some temporary softening or flattening of foliage during transport is normal. Place the plants in clean water and allow them time to rehydrate before positioning them permanently.

      Always follow the planting-depth guidance on the individual plant labels supplied. Different marginal species prefer different positions, so the six plants should not automatically be placed at the same depth.

      1. Check each plant

      Remove all delivery packaging and inspect the plants.

      The plants are already established in 1 litre Finofil aquatic baskets and normally do not need to be repotted before being placed in the pond.

      Allow them to rehydrate after their journey before making final decisions about their appearance or position.

      2. Plan the planting positions

      Consider the shape of the pond, available shelves, planting depths and the mature form of the plants supplied.

      Rather than distributing all six plants at identical intervals, try arranging them in small, informal groups or clusters. This usually creates a softer and more natural-looking pond margin.

      Where the varieties allow, combine different heights and foliage forms to create variation around the pond edge.

      3. Check the planting depth

      Read the individual label supplied with each plant before positioning it.

      Marginal plants can differ considerably in their preferred water depth. Some grow best around the damp pond edge, while others can sit with part of their basket below the water surface.

      Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

      Do not assume that all six baskets should be submerged to the same depth.

      4. Position the baskets

      Place each basket on a stable pond shelf or in the appropriate marginal position.

      Lower submerged baskets gently into the water to avoid disturbing the planting medium. Make sure they stand securely and are not positioned where strong currents from pumps, waterfalls or fountains will continually disturb them.

      Newly positioned plants can often establish more easily towards the shallower end of their recommended planting range before being moved deeper if appropriate.

      5. Allow the plants to establish

      Aquatic plants naturally vary in appearance throughout the year. Depending on the season, plants may arrive compact, recently cut back, without flowers or at a different stage of growth from the photographs shown.

      Allow the plants time to settle and establish before assessing their eventual height, spread or flowering performance.

      Care Instructions
      • Keep each plant at the depth and in the conditions recommended on its individual label
      • Ensure plants positioned around damp pond margins do not dry out during warm weather
      • Check baskets periodically to make sure they remain upright and stable
      • Remove damaged foliage and spent flowers when necessary
      • Leave removed cuttings and other plant material beside the pond for around 24 hours before composting or disposing of it, allowing small pond creatures an opportunity to return to the water
      • Control excessive growth where a plant begins to dominate the pond margin
      • Divide or repot plants when their baskets become congested
      • Avoid adding ordinary garden fertiliser or general-purpose compost to the pond
      • If feeding is required, use only fertiliser intended specifically for aquatic plants

      In autumn, avoid cutting every stem back at once. Where appropriate, leave some upright stems and foliage in place over winter to provide additional structure and shelter for insects. Remove excessive dead growth before it falls into the water, then cut back remaining old stems as new growth begins in spring.

      Growers Tips

      Six established 1 litre plants allow you to create a substantial planted margin without waiting for smaller nursery plants to fill out.

      For a natural appearance, avoid forming an evenly spaced ring around the pond. Small groups of two or three plants, separated by areas of open water or lower planting, often create a more convincing transition between pond and garden.

      Where the selection supplied allows, position taller or more upright plants towards the rear of broad shelves and use lower or softer forms towards the front.

      The plants are supplied in 1 litre Finofil aquatic baskets and should not need repotting when they arrive. As plants mature, however, more vigorous varieties may eventually benefit from division or moving into a larger [aquatic basket].

      Remember that marginal planting is only one layer of a balanced pond. In a new pond, consider the relationship between marginals, underwater oxygenating plants and surface or deep-water planting rather than trying to fill every area with marginals.

      Wildlife Tips

      Marginal planting creates important habitat at the point where water and land meet. Flowers can provide feeding opportunities for pollinating insects, while stems and foliage offer shelter, resting places and emergence points for dragonflies, damselflies and other pond life.

      Dense planting around parts of the pond edge can also provide valuable cover for frogs, toads and newts moving between the water and surrounding garden.

      Try to create physical connections between the pond and nearby planting rather than treating the water as an isolated feature. Allow some foliage to reach or overhang the water and retain areas of vegetation around the pond where wildlife can move and shelter.

      Where possible, provide a gently sloping edge, stones or another secure route into and out of the pond. This is particularly useful where the pond has steep or smooth sides.

      Avoid pesticides, herbicides and unnecessary pond chemicals around a wildlife pond. Leaving some areas slightly informal and retaining selected stems through winter can provide considerably more habitat than keeping every part of the pond edge closely trimmed.

      For the greatest wildlife value, combine marginal planting with suitable underwater vegetation, surface cover and nearby garden planting to create habitat at several different levels.

      30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

      If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

      Returns & problems on arrival

      Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

      Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

      If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

      We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
