  • Usually supplied as a grower-selected mixed range of suitable oxygenating species

  • Suitable for pond shelves, planting baskets and gently sloping pond bases, depending on species
  • Fully hardy in UK ponds

    Growing Instructions

    Please always follow the instructions on the individual plant labels supplied. The guidance below provides general advice for oxygenating pond plants.

    Placement and depth

    • Oxygenating plants grow in or beneath the water, with some varieties producing foliage or flowers above the surface 
    • Most ponds are best planted within zones 2–4, covering shallow shelves through to deeper water
    • Plants should be established at shallower depths first, and may then be moved deeper as they mature where appropriate
    • Some species will tolerate greater depths once established, while others prefer shallower positions

    Always follow the planting guidance on the individual plant label supplied, as depth preferences vary by species.

    Sunlight

    • Most oxygenating plants prefer full sun to partial shade
    • Adequate light supports steady growth and nutrient uptake

    Hardiness

    • Plants supplied in this collection are fully hardy in UK ponds
    • Growth may slow or die back in winter, returning naturally in spring
    Care Instructions
    • Allow plants time to establish before judging coverage or performance 
    • Thin or remove excess growth if oxygenators become too dense 
    • Remove dying foliage if it accumulates at the surface

    Avoid removing all oxygenators at once, as this can disrupt pond balance.

    Growers Tips
    • Potted oxygenators provide more permanent structure. Once established, they anchor in place and offer consistent nutrient uptake from a fixed position. They are ideal for pond shelves, shallower areas, or where controlled placement is important.
    • Weighted bunches provide fast, flexible coverage. They are especially useful in deeper water and can be repositioned easily as the pond develops. Bunches establish quickly but may require occasional thinning as growth increases.
    • When pruning, watch out for snails and other wildlife that might be on the plant; remove carefully or leave the cuttings at the pond edge for a day to give them time to return to the water.

    For best results, many ponds benefit from a combination of both, using potted plants for long-term stability and bunches for adaptable coverage.

    How many oxygenators do I need?

    As a general guide:

    • Around 2–3 1 litre oxygenating plants per square metre of pond surface is suitable for most ponds once established
    • For weighted bunches, five bunches typically cover around 2.5 m² of water

    Requirements vary depending on pond depth, fish stocking levels, sunlight and existing planting. It is often better to start modestly and add more plants as the pond matures.

    Introduce oxygenators early in the season where possible, as this allows them time to establish before warmer conditions encourage algae growth.

    Wildlife Tips

    Oxygenating plants are essential to a healthy pond ecosystem. Fine, submerged foliage provides shelter for fish fry, amphibian larvae and aquatic insects, helping to protect them from predators.

    Clearer water supported by oxygenators allows light to reach deeper levels of the pond. This encourages the growth of other aquatic plants, which in turn provide additional cover, spawning areas and feeding opportunities for wildlife.

    Oxygenators also support microscopic life within the pond, forming the base of the aquatic food web.

    Fish and oxygenating plants

    Some fish species interact differently with oxygenators:

    • Goldfish and native pond fish generally coexist well with oxygenating plants, particularly once plants are established
    • Carp and large koi are more likely to disturb or consume oxygenators, especially newly introduced plants

    In ponds with carp or koi, higher planting densities, protected planting areas or a greater reliance on potted oxygenators may improve success. Allowing plants time to establish before introducing fish can also make a significant difference.

    30 litre plants and some larger items are sent by specialist pallet delivery rather than standard parcel.

    If your order contains products with different delivery timings, it may be split into more than one shipment. Plants or products that are ready for immediate dispatch will normally be sent first, while later-season plants will be sent when they are ready. This helps us send live plants at the appropriate point in the season and in suitable condition to travel.

    Current standard charges for mainland UK include:

    • £5.95 Standard Delivery
    • £49.95 Specialist Pallet Delivery – used for 30 litre plants and certain other larger items and usually delivered within 4-15 working days. Where needed, we or the carrier will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery date.

    Returns & problems on arrival

    Because we sell live aquatic plants and molluscs, some parts of our policy work differently from standard retail.

    Live plants and molluscs are perishable and are not suitable for routine returns once they have been prepared for dispatch.

    If there is a genuine issue on arrival, please contact us within 24 hours using the form on our Contact page, with your order number, photographs, and a short explanation.

    We will always review genuine issues carefully and fairly. Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate remedy may include a replacement, refund, or partial refund where appropriate.
